5 No-Chip Tips For Your Buff + File Gel Manicure

Two weeks of wear...high shine...dig in your purse for your keys immediately...the benefits of gel manicures go on and on! While gel may seem like a miracle product, many factors can effect its longevity - including hormones and body chemistry - but here are a few easy ways to help your Buff + File gel manicure last!
1. Treat your nails like jewels, not tools! This is the number one tip for a lasting manicure of any kind. Using your nails to pry, pick, poke, or pinch can easily break the seal of gel polish along the free edge of the nail and cause chips. Take as much care as possible with your nails, and find an appropriate tool to do the job!
2. Moisturize. Apply lotion to hands and nails, and oil to your cuticles daily. Lack of moisture in the skin around the nails can cause premature lifting and chipping. Solar Oil ($3, and in convenient mini bottles) is a great option and available for purchase in our online shop and in the salon.
3. A week in, rub rubbing 99% alcohol on nails to bring the shine back. Exposure to the elements and products such as lotion can take the shine off of a gel manicure. To get them looking like new, use a cotton ball to rub 99% rubbing alcohol (available at drug stores) onto each nail.
4. Don't pick or peel! Picking and peeling causes damage to the nail plate and can affect the staying power of future gel manicures. Have the gel professionally removed, and try not to leave gel on for longer than two weeks, as the product is designed to wear for that length of time. Wearing gel longer can make it more difficult to remove, which could in turn cause nail damage.

We're updating our service menu and are so excited to debut these new experiences as of May 1! So what's new and different?
For starters, we're adding a Gel Pedicure to our line up. Until now we've been accommodating gel on toes by request only, but due to popularity, we are officially adding it to our line up. At $75, the Gel Pedicure is our Signature Pedicure (soaking, shaping, cuticle care, sugar scrub, foot file exfoliation, massage) with gel polish added on. We have OPI and Shellac gel polish, however we strongly recommend OPI Gel for pedicures. Your soak off is included in the price.
We have also added a Kiddie Mani and Kiddie Pedi to our offerings. Previously we recommended that kids under 12 have our Express services, however now we've got nail services tailored just to our smallest guests! At $20, our Kiddie Mani includes soaking, shaping, mini-massage, and polish. At $30, our Kiddie Pedi includes soaking, shaping, a mini-massage with sugar scrub, and polish.
Our Polish Change for toes is getting an upgrade! Formerly polish only, our polish change for toes now includes shaping, a hot towel cleanse, and polish for $18. The quickest way to refresh your feet!
Our Express Manicure will remain on our service menu offerings, however we have changed the name to Polish Change (Hands). The service remains the same - shaping, cuticle oil, and polish.

American Spa Magazine interviewed Buff + File co-founder & creative director Andree Connell for their October issue. Speaking about why the Millennial generation is driving the movement towards natural nail care, Connell said, "Millennials, in particular, are conscientious consumers, as many were raised with natural and organic products their entire lives. Now that millennials are growing up and becoming the heads of their own households, they insist on buying goods and services that reflect their values for themselves and their families.” The article also quoted celebrity nail artist and entrepreneur Deborah Lippmann, as well as educators and founders from nail brands SpaRitual and DazzleDry.

We are thrilled to introduce skin care services at Buff & File! In response to client demand, adding a skin care room to our new location at 218 State Street was a priority. Our skin care service menu was designed by esthetician Brook Robillard and our waxing offerings were designed by esthetician/nail technician Kerri Herrick. You know Brook and Kerri from our mani-pedi team (and both will continue to offer nail services!), however with each having extensive skin care experience in their professional backgrounds, we're delighted to see them expand the scope of practice at B&F. Our skin care team also includes esthetician Lindsey Messina, currently offering both skin care and waxing services as well as lymphatic drainage. Lindsey has devoted several days each week to booking ONLY skin services to make scheduling a cinch for our clientele. Watch for more of our talented staff to be offering services in the skin care room in the next few weeks!
Here's the inside scoop from Brook on the process of designing our Flash Facial menu:
"I am so happy to be introducing our Flash Facials here at Buff & File! The entire process has been so fun and exciting, from finding the perfect products to creating our service menu. Our approach to skin treatments is completely different than the typical spa experience. We maintain our modern and social atmosphere by offering what we call Flash Facials. The idea of Flash treatments came from the thought that even the busiest clients still need treatments for specific skin conditions, like breakouts or dehydration. Those clients don’t always want a fluffy spa experience, but instead need a result-driven treatment that will get them in and out the door quickly, while giving their skin exactly what it needs.
We have two facial treatments on our menu. The first is tailored to those with an oily skin type who are prone to breakouts. We call it our Flash Fix Acne Treatment, and it includes a double cleanse, steam, a papaya and pineapple enzyme to exfoliate, extractions, direct high frequency to kill bacteria and heal the skin, toner, eye serum, an antioxidant rich facial serum, a matte finish moisturizer, and a little Lip Zing! This treatment is done in just thirty-five minutes!
The second facial treatment is our Flash Hydration Facial that can have our clients out in thirty minutes. This treatment includes a double cleanse, steam, gentle exfoliation, a Japanese matcha mask to balance moisture and nourish the skin, a rose and geranium toner to repair and soothe the skin, eye serum, facial serum, a rich facial crème, and, of course, Lip Zing. This treatment is perfect for those with dry, dehydrated, aging or sensitive skin.
We also offer other flash treatments like Organic Peels, Direct High Frequency, and Lymphatic Drainage, all of which are done in twenty minutes or less.
We chose to use organic products from Norabloom Botanicals, an organic skincare company based in Ithaca, NY, and from natural skincare company, Birchrose + Co, based right here in Portsmouth. Along with creating our custom blend body scrub for our pedicures, they have filled our treatment room with exactly what we need to allow each client to leave with a glow! Both company’s holistic approach to skincare and beauty paired perfectly with the standards of Buff & File. We also have these products in retail, so clients can keep up their results between visits.

Rebrand: Our new logo!
As you know by now, Buff & File Nail Bar recently moved around the corner to 218 State Street in Portsmouth, NH. The move allowed for more mani-pedi chairs and the addition of a waxing and skin care room for our quickly growing business. With the move, we wanted an updated look for our logo. Buff & File co-owner and graphic designer Andree Connell designed the new identity, and says this about the update (from www.andreecreative.com):
The interior of the new space is airy and modern, with natural elements throughout, including wood pedicure platform and matching nail bar, and gray and white marble tile floors. Custom lighting brightens the space and illuminates the polish bottles, which provide a pop of color. I wanted the logo to feel equally airy and modern. The polish "drip" graphic above the text was inspired by my love of fashion magazines and the artistic way that magazine art directors and photographers swatch makeup for their articles. I love those artful blobs, drips, splotches, and smudges, and can't help but wonder how many times they had to dribble the product until they got it just right. Typography is one of my favorite elements of design, and these fonts were both new discoveries for me especially for this project. The "Buff + File" font is called Moon, which I love for its minimalism. Below, the font for "nail bar" is called Honeymoon, which I chose for its angles which are complimentary to the polish drip graphic and provide eye-pleasing contrast to the straight lines of Moon.

Last winter, we decided to liven up our walls by showcasing some of our best nail work. We teamed up with Mallory Parkington Photography for a photo collaboration and are absolutely thrilled with the results! After enlisting a few clients and staffers as hand models, our creative team curated some of their favorite designs, and our talented manicurists got to work. We hit the grocery store for some colorful props including citrus, candy, and ice cream, and the whole crew spent the morning at Mallory's studio on Congress Street.
